October Healthy Pet Clinic outshines the first: more than 100 owners of needy households served

A bright sunny October Sunday afternoon helped attract dozens of pet owners to this month's edition of the Healthy Pet Clinic in Syracuse.  More than 30 volunteers served more than 70 pet owners and some 107 dogs and cats at St. Lucy's Church Auditorim.  Some people waited over two hours for the chance to get an exam, vaccinations and flea or tic treatment in exchange for a $10 donation per animal.

The clinic targets primarily residents of Syracuse's near and south west sides who have financial limitatations.  Volunteer veterinarians worked six exam tables to care for the pets over more than five hours straight.  It is the first clinic of its kind in the Syracuse area.  The Cornell University Shelter Medicine program is assisting the Central New York Animal Welfare Coalition in organizing and executing the clnic.   The Shamrock Animal Fund has taken a lead role in the effort.

Next Clinic

Pet owners expressed their deep appreciation for the affordable service.  Some 25 more pets had to be turned away as time and supplies dwindled.  They were offered an opportunity to return for the third clinic which is already scheduled for Sunday, November 13th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at St. Lucy's Church on Gifford Street.  Pet owners are advised to arrive early to secure a spot in that clinic.
